Location
At the main entrance to the Periyar Tiger Reserve at Kumily, 3 km from Thekkady is the Spice Village Hotel. Adjacent to the Periyar sanctuary, the village is 190 km from Cochin and 145 km from Madurai. 
The look of the village
Overlooking the harbor mouth and delta dotted with ocean liners, the Spice Village
comprises of Cottages resembling those built by the people of the native Oorali and
Mannan tribes. The traditional high four poster bedstead is the central attraction in th
e rooms and suites of this hotel. Each of these comes with a foot stool for you to clim
b onto it. The rest of the décor is also in tune with the rustic traditional flavor that saturates the atmosphere here. Terracotta tiled floors and whitewashed walls are coupled with telephone and an attached bath with shower cubicle in every cottage. Each cottage have a verandah winding around it where you can enjoy your morning cup of tea while the birds at the adjacent sanctuary set about there daily routine. At the centre of the village is a turquoise pool overlooking which is the thatched roofed buffet restaurant.

The Village Kitchen
The village restaurant(buffet) offers Indian and continental cuisines for your platter. Bit the icing on the cake is the cookery classes and demonstration given by the chef every evening that allows you to witness, and if you are interested, to try your hand at preparing one of the spicy Kerala delicacies.
Safaris and treks
A hour boat safari on the lake Periyar at dusk will take you to drawing room of the wildlife kingdom. Homeward bound birds and animals (mainly elephants) drinking at the lake is a common sight. The trip can be booked at the hotel. Forest treks with a tribal guide will take you deep into the tropical forest far away from the crowd. At the end of a boat ride to the far end of the lake, you will proceed on foot, venturing deep into unadulterated forest grounds.
