Introduction :

Overa Wildlife Sanctuary, lying to the southeast of Srinagar, close to Pahalgam is one of the famous tourist attractions of this region. About 76 kms from Srinagar, this sanctuary gives you the chance to see some of the endangered, rare and protected type of animals and birds. The characteristic features of Kashmir's Overa Wildlife Sanctuary are its lush green hills, eye-catching mountain landscapes and deep valleys. For reaching Overa Wildlife Sanctuary via air and road, Srinagar is the nearest link. The closest rail station is at Jammu. This place is also well connected to Pahalgam and Anantnag via road. In case you wish to have a look at the animals of this sanctuary, the months of September to April is your best choice to visit the place. However, aim for the months of March to August if you intend to view the various species of birds at this sanctuary.

Overa Wildlife Sanctuary gives you the glimpse of the rich variety of Kashmir's floral species. Some of them are Pinus griffithii, Morus Alba, Abies pindrow, Juglans regia etc., to name a few. The basic shrub of the sanctuary boasts of Desmodium tiliaefolium, Indigofera heterantha, etc. The ground of this sanctuary is covered by a major coat of Dicotlydonous herbs, which consist mainly of Artemisia vulgaris, Taraxacum officinale, Anemone spp., etc. This place is also home to about 13 categories of animals. Many of these animals, at present, are staring at the great danger of extinction.
