Wildlife Sanctuaries in India

Wildlife sanctuaries in India are a wildlife enthusiast’s dream come true as they provide a home to several rare and endangered species as well. Lying in the Indomalaya ecozone, India boasts of a rich biodiversity and is home to a staggering number of species of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects. It is no wonder then that there are over 300 big and small wildlife sanctuaries in India.
These wildlife sanctuaries protect, preserve and nurture various species of animals, birds, reptiles and insects without confining them to cages and compounds. The animals are left free to roam in the sanctuary area which is free from commercial structures and activities and is supports vegetation and also feature natural or man made water bodies such as rivers and lakes.
In North India, popular wildlife sanctuaries such as Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary and Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary, Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary, Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, Nandadevi Wildlife Sanctuary and Sambhar Wildlife Sanctuary are located.
Nestled in the eastern region of India is the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary and the much celebrated Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary. Other famous wildlife sanctuaries of East India include Namdapha Wildlife Sanctuary, Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary, Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Keibul Lamjao Wildlife Sanctuary, Sirohi Wildlife Sanctuary and Kangchendzonga Wildlife Sanctuary.
Western India boasts of a great treasure of flora and fauna and is home to revered wildlife sanctuaries such as Marine Wildlife Sanctuary, Little Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary, Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, Wild Ass Wildlife Santuary and more.
Southern India on the other hand also enjoys a varied habitation of mammals, birds and reptiles. Interesting sanctuaries in this region include the Crocodile Bank, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Bandipur Wildlife Sanctuary, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Kalakkadu Sanctuary, Mundanthurai Sanctuary, Srivilliputhur Giant Squirrel Sanctuary and the Vallanadu Blackbuck Sanctuary.
